My name is Silvia Wanjiku Kamau, born in 1984 in Rironi Village, Limuru District, Kiambu County in Kenya. I started school in 1988 at Rironi Nursery and later had my primary education at Wangige Primary School where I sat for my K.C.P.E. I proceeded for my secondary education at Mary Leakey Girls High School and sat for my K.C.S.E in the year 2001 and attained grade C- in the same. I am married and am a mother of 3 children. Currently, I am a farmer in Kinangop where I rear cows, sheep, chicken and grow a variety of crops for both subsistence and commercial use.
Currently, I have 2 dairy cows which produce an average milk of 20 kg per day which I sell to Muki Farmers Co-operative Society at KSh 600 per day amounting to KSh 18,000 per month. This is equivalent to approximately $175. In addition, I rear 10 chickens which lay one tray of eggs per week which tabulates to 30 dollars per month. Also, I grow a variety of crops including potatoes and French beans for which, on average, I get 300 dollars after 3 months. My monthly expenses amount to 100 dollars per month as my husband is employed temporarily and caters for most of the expenses including upkeep of the family. In most cases, we save the income we get from farming or in developing our home.
I intend to use my first loan I will get from Zidisha in upgrading my poultry farming. Currently there is a Hybrid called Kroller which is doing very well. The Kroller chicken is giving out good returns as it lay eggs daily and still its left to roam around the homestead and is fed on leftovers food and Kales cabbages which are plenty in my farm. I intend to buy 5 Krollers which are being sold at a price of 12 dollars per head. Through this will improve my chicken as they lay eggs on daily basis as compared to the indigenous breed. On average, an egg goes for Ksh. 20 at retail price and A tray may sell at Ksh 480. The demand for eggs will always remain high for both retail and wholesale market. I will start by supplying locally and eventually as time goes by I will improve and possibly target institutions. The proceeds from this venture will eventually help me have an overhaul of other business activities that I engage in, I intend also in future to improve the breeds of dairy cattle that I have but first I will start with poultry farming.
I’m looking forward for your assistance.
Thank you.
