My name is Mary Wanyoike born in Makueni county in Kenya in a family of 5 children 2 girls and 3 boys. My parents had moved from nyeri and settled at Makueni in the 1985. I grew up and attended school in the village. Like most of people who grew up in the village, life is hard. I could wake up early to help my parents with farm work before proceeding to school. Though with difficulties, I managed to complete my highschool education. I was employed as a shop attendant at the village shopping center before I decided to venture into bee keeping.
My business entails selling pure honey. I get honey from my beehives and those from other villagers. I started the business after some people from an NGO came to our village and educated us on the importance of bee keeping and gave us free beehives after finishing their training. I thank them greatly for what they did to change our lives.
I buy raw honey from my fellow farmers refine and park it into containers then sell at higher price. I choose this business because it's not hard to establish and it helps to keep the youths busy. As a result, it creates employment to many who could have resulted into crimes and drug abuse.
I have employed 2 people who helps me with harvesting and packaging of the honey. The profit from the business is used to support my siblings who school and putting some of it to the business. The funds am seeking will help to buy few more beehives and packaging material. I intend to train more youths to join my team as we work to eradicate poverty in the community.
The funds will be used to increase the number of beehives in my farm hence more honey to be harvested. The extra funds will help my team financially as our earnings will also increase. I will employ more youths in the project.
