I am Elizabeth A. Odero, a woman in Agribusiness residing in Kisumu City, dealing in poultry rearing. Am married and a mother of three (3), One girl 23, boy 22 and a last boy who is 12 years old. I was born in Siaya county, Bondo. l am a first born in a family of eight, comprising of four girls and four boys. I grew up in Nairobi where l begun my schooling at Dr. Livingston Primary and Arya Girls' Secondary school. I later did a secretarial course at Reeswood Secretarial College. Managed to work in an advocates firm before moving back to Kisumu to continue the same. I also worked with Kemri/CDC under HIV/AlDS programs in Siaya and Kisumu counties. I later ventured into business for many years now, selling second hand household stuff. . I went back and did a certificate & Diploma in Guidance & Counseling at University Of Nairobi. Later did a degree in Theology too. My father passed on in 2003 and is now survived by my mother and seven siblings. I believe that life offers all of us opportunities to be better and grow and that anything that starts small has ability to grow. I believe in being a channel for others too and anything l begin is not as individual but touches other lives as well. I am here because l know l can move my business to greater heights, determination, resilience, timelines and marketing will help me achieve my goal of being one of the sort after poultry farms. Poultry has money and is a ready market that needs the best and quality birds.

Poultry business is very lucrative and the demand is quite high. l rear chicken, grow traditional vegetables, kales, onions etc. For many years have been involved in second hand business where l sell households ie sheets, duvets, kitchen utensils, carpets and rugs. I also got involved in soap & detergent making during COVID-19 and this kept us afloat during that period. I love rearing animals and l began with breeding dogs, this continued and late last year l bought three hens which were 2 months old, one was indigenous (kienyeji) and two layers. I reared then till they were able to hatch eggs. I used feeds and l was able to buy growers then layer Kienyeji mash and layers mash. I got 25 chicks the first time. This encouraged me to continue. At times l could lose some chicks to predators but l now made a house for them. I realized this was a good business and decided to also be selling the eggs at 15/- from the layers. The next round l got 32 chicks, reared them using Starter crumbs and chick mash and sold at one month at 290/-. As l continued to learn, feed, vaccinate and generally know how to handle the chicks better, l realized l wanted to do more of Sasso chicks. They pay off faster, so the returns cannot be compared to the indigenous ones. Have been able to join other groups for farmers and together we are stronger. We share ideas and learn together. Right now l have a total of ten (10) grown indigenous and Sasso breeds, 50 chicks, one cock and a female turkey. Four of the hens are brooding right now with a total of thirteen eggs each. Some of the eggs from the layers l always keep selling. This business is also easier to handle since l feed my chickens in the morning, then leave them with water then again in the evening. For the small chicks l clean their house then leave them inside but allow them to come out in the evening once l.am back home. Feeds, 1 kg starter crumbs @150for 1 week 600/-. Chick mash and Growers 1 kg 100x2 for 1 week 800. Layers &'Kienyeji Mash @120x2=240x4=960. The grown chicken l sell at 800/- and the cock at 1300-1500/-. Right now l am preparing for December since that is a peak season. Since l am now enjoying the business l look forward to having 300 Sasso chicks, which l plan to be selling from three to four weeks old. That way l can be able to expand and reach more clientale. I also want to get a bigger incubator to help me in hatching, this way l can also sell even day old chicks. Selling at an earlier stage helps reduce cost of feeding etc. For the Sasso F1, l will be buying day old chicks, already vaccinated and any other they follow up and give other vaccines. The future lies in poultry business and l am definitely in it.

Since this will be my first funding, l will buy 1 day old chicks @100 each then buy a sack of feeds. I will then resell them at 4 weeks old @290 each and that way by the eighth week l will be able to do that twice.
