Hello Zidisha Community,
Growing up in the vibrant yet challenging slum of Githurai, I was always a curious, tech-loving kid. My love for learning and tinkering with new things often outpaced what my parents could provide, but one pivotal moment changed the course of my life: the arrival of a computer.
My father, who worked tirelessly as a sign painter for an advertising agency, eventually managed to buy a secondhand computer—a 1997 PowerMac G3. Though it was old, it became a treasure in our home. Occasionally, he let me explore it, sparking a fascination with technology that would shape my future. That computer became my teacher, and before long, I had taught myself how to edit videos. By the time I was in secondary school, I was earning money from my newfound skill.
Fast forward 14 years, and video editing has become more than just a job—it's a calling. Those early challenges and opportunities built the foundation for the life I have today. Thanks to this career, I’ve been able to sustain my family without having to work far from home like my father once did. Now, I strive to create a nurturing environment where my children can pursue their passions, just as I did.
With this vision, I started a media company and a few YouTube channels as creative outlets. These channels document my DIY projects and initiatives at a school my parents founded. My ultimate goal is to grow these channels into streams of passive income that allow me to give back to my community in meaningful ways.
One of my dreams is to bridge the digital divide in my neighborhood. I’ve already begun donating computers to local public schools and am working on providing free internet access. My hope is to give young kids the same chance I had to discover the world of technology, empowering them to build brighter futures and uplift our entire community.
Thank you for being part of this journey. Together, I believe we can inspire change and make a lasting impact.
I primarily work from home as a remote video editor, serving clients from around the world. In addition, I’ve built a media company that not only brings in video coverage clients but also offers other creative services. Despite the growing competition in the video editing industry, my years of experience have enabled me to consistently secure clients and thrive in this space.
Currently, I’m embarking on an exciting new venture—establishing a Wireless Internet Service Provider (WISP) in my community. The demand for reliable, high-quality internet is incredibly high, yet the available options are scarce and often insufficient. This project aligns perfectly with my passion for technology and my desire to create meaningful content that entertains, inspires, and uplifts others.
Living completely off-grid has allowed me to keep my expenses low. My main outgoings are my internet bills and a long-term loan I took to purchase land and build a home for my family. The internet business is not just a financial opportunity; it’s a platform to achieve more. My plan is to reinvest profits to scale the business, expand its reach beyond my local community, and create a sustainable source of income.
My ultimate vision is to build a technology-focused school that provides affordable, high-quality education for the community. This would be an extension of my parents’ school, which continues to serve children in the Githurai slum. I hope this journey will empower not just my family but also the broader community, creating opportunities for the next generation to thrive in a technology-driven world.
With the funds from this project, I will establish a sustainable fish pond that will serve as a reliable source of fresh, nutritious fish for my family and the local community. The funds will be used to cover the costs of pond construction, including excavation, water management system, equipment to maintain the ecosystem and some fish stock. The most important thing for now is getting started and improving food security. Apart from food security, it will also provide a steady source of income through fish sales, enabling me to improve my family's financial stability and invest in other ventures to grow our household's wealth. The pond will also serve as a local fish supplier, reducing the cost of purchasing fish for the community; offering fresh and affordable fish. Finally, this project will promote environmentally conscious practices by utilizing natural resources sustainably, which is a huge thing I champion for.
