ABOUT ME
My name is Meshack Kibet I was born in Kabenes village in Uasin gishu county in North Rift province 28 Kilometers from Eldoret town. I joined Kalyet primary school in the year 1995. My home is about 1 and half kilometers from the school so i used to trek to and fro. I managed to complete my primary education and joined Kalyet Secondary in the year 2004. I am now a college student at Kenyatta university Ruiru campus in Nairobi. I believe in hard work and perseverance this attribute let me to start my clothing business although I had little capital. this is challenging because I have to deal with both college and business at the same time. But am sure with the assistance from Zidisha I will be able to increase my stock because the demand is so high among my fellow students around the campus where my business base is located. I came to start this business the moment I joined college when I saw an opportunity(market gap) among my colleagues whom we are studying together. My Uasin gishu county has loamy soil supporting Maize and wheat production among other cash crops and dairy farming also practiced. I am among the Nandi people who are the sub tribe of the large Kalenjin community who occupy uasin gishu and Nandi county. I would like my children to do venture into business at the same time pursuing their studies to make them self reliant.
I like traveling and playing foot ball during my free time.
ABOUT MY BUSINESS( SECOND HAND CLOTHS BUSINESS)
I came to start my business using the little pocket money I saved for my upkeep in the college. My business is situated just directly opposite Kenyatta university main gate Kwa Ha kairo. The goods I provide include Shoes, ladies and men cloths. We have so many students living around the campus who study different courses hence the demand for clothing is so high that I can not even managed alone to meet this demand. But with the zidisha I know my profit will increase by approximately 50%.
It was somehow easy to start as compared to other business because of the little capital required and the high market demand also considering that Gikomba market is just a few kilometers where cheap second hand cloths are sold.
I started my business with only 10,000 Kenyan shillings ( approximately 100 US Dollars) by purchasing a bale of mitumba( Second hand cloths). At first I realized little profit per week amounting to 600 Ksh. ( 8 US Dollars). It was after 3 weeks that I was able to receive many customers others even paying for down payment before delivery. At the moment I am operating at the profit of about 1200 Ksh. excluding the expenses, and my stock comprises of cloths for all gender.
I used my profit for paying rent, electricity ,my personal upkeep and reinvesting in my stock.
HOW I WILL INVEST MY FIRST LOAN
My first loan from zidisha will help me to meet and expand my business to other demand from my fellow students around the campus. I would like to introduce second hand shoes for ladies and men in my stock. secondly I would like also to increase my stock because right now I am known vendor around the campus hence there is increase in the number of customers.
1. Bale of Men shoes (50 Pairs) cost 3500 Ksh. Approximately 35 Us Dollars
2. Bale of Ladies shoes( 50 Pairs) Cost 4000 Ksh. Approximately 40 US Dollars
3. One bale of cheap mitumba cost. 3000 Ksh. Approximately 30 US Dollars.
After this investment I predict my profit to increase hence my life and those of my siblings and my community will change for the better.
With the loan from zidisha I expect my customers to meet their required quantity and quality for their demand and as a result my income and profit will increase by about 50%-60 %. This is encouraging because am just a student and by the time I completed my studies I will be able to support myself and my family and the community at large hence lifting the standard of living.
