About Me

Hello, my name is Khady Faye. I am a practicing muslim and live with my mother, brother and niece. At the moment, I am responsible for them because my sister who works cannot manage everything, she needs my help. Now, I want to work but I don’t have the means to finance myself so that I can work. It’s my mother and my father who educated me well but my father has since passed away.

My Business

Now I work in a training school called ICM, institute of commerce and management, but during my vacations I do not work. It’s for this reason I would like to change my workplace. It’s at the Regional Council of Dakar where I propose the opening of my new restaurant. It’s for this that I ask for a loan from Zidisha to open this restaurant. I have already borrowed twice at FDA (microlending institution) - 350,000 CFA (roughly $700) and 650,000 CFA (roughly $1,300) – but the interest rates that they requested were too high. It’s for this reason I stopped working with them after the repayment of my second loan.

Loan Proposal

I want a loan from Zidisha so that I can start a restaurant that I want to open. Because I want to work to be able to pay back my Zidisha loan. The money I make will go to Zidisha and the rest will go to help my family. Because I have a niece living with me for whom I am responsible. It’s because of this and my mother that I want to work to make money and help them both.

    Dear lenders,

I spoke this morning with Madame Faye. She reported that her mother is still in the hospital, and I am sure Madame Faye's focus at the moment is on caring for her.

Madame Faye is nevertheless working hard to collect payment for sales she had made on credit, with the aim of making her final loan repayment of $52 soon.

Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any inquiries or comments concerning this loan.

    Best regards,

    Julia Kurnia

    Salut chers bailleurs!
Merci!

    Dear Lenders,

My name is Clarissa and I'm the Communications Associate for Zidisha this summer. Khady just called me to say that she will be late on her payment this month because her mother is sick and she has to buy medicine for her. She is hoping to get the reimbursement in after tomorrow. Hopefully her mother will recover soon. :)

Khady invited me over for Buey this morning (Buey is a sweet milky Senegalese drink). She is proud to report that the stand she purchased with her Zidisha loan is almost fully renovated and she expects to begin work there next month. In the meantime, Khady continues to cook for the university. She is in the process of hiring a replacement so she can still profit from her old stand while cooking at her new one. Khady wanted to reiterate her thanks to all her lenders and says that you'll hear from her shortly.

Here are some photos from my visit. The university Khady works for, Khady in front of her stand, Buey and pain au chocolat - the ideal Senegalese breakfast.

Recipe for Thiebu Jem (Literally means Fish and Rice in Wolof, Senegal's most popular dish)

Hello lenders, here is my recipe for Thiebu Jem

    I. When I prepare fish and rice I begin by preparing peanut oil and cutting onions.
II. Once the oil heats, I put the onions and fresh pepper in the oil.
III. I then pour tomato paste on to the oil and I add water.
IV. I put this into a cooking pot and add vegetables like carrots and eggplant.
    V. I also put sour eggplant, garlic, black pepper and yams. Once it boils, I wash the rice and put it in the pot.
VI. Afterward, I take out the fish and vegetables and keep the rice.
VII. I keep the rice in the pot until it is soft.

Hello, it's Khady Faye. Here are photos that I'm sending you - jars of carrots and mave (a Senegalese bean), cakes with ginger juice and ditar juice (a green, sweet Senegalese fruit). Thanks to the loan you have lent me, I can work and succeed.

Hello Zidisha, I am very happy at the moment because I can see that you guys are beginning to show interest in the loan that I'm proposing. I hope I can receive this loan quickly.
At the moment I am preparing baignets (doughnut like pastries), cakes and fruit juices to sell for the month of Ramadan. I will start selling them the first day of Ramadan (this Wednesday or Thursday). This is why you need to help me as quickly as possible with this loan. I am counting on you. I will post photos of the baignets, cakes and juices I will sell for Ramadan so you can know that I'm a dedicated worker, but I worry because I lack the means to support my ambitions. And I am counting on you. Thankyou

Khady Faye stopped by the office this morning to talk about her restaurant, Senegalese cuisine and the challenges of running a restaurant in today’s economy.

    Business Plan:

Khady runs a restaurant at a college in Dakar. With the help of an assistant, Khady serves students, faculty and college employees breakfast and lunch. She cooks primarily Senegalese foods - especially Chebujem (literally fish and rice), Senegal’s national dish – as well as local fruit juices and coffee. Her best selling plate, however, is Chebujab (meat and rice).
Khady loves to cook. She began working at a restaurant the summer before high school. Khady claims that because her food was so good, clients would let her keep the change after being served. These tips made up for her low wages as an assistant chef. In making enough money to help her family, Khady decided to quit school and work full time.
As much as she enjoyed working as an assistant at the restaurant, she felt exploited and underpaid. Lacking reliable funding and a formal high school education, Khady boldly decided to start her own restaurant. “I wanted the independence,” she explained, “ the liberty, and most of all, the risk”. Khady works hard not only to earn money, but more importantly, to control how she spends that money. Today, Khady is proud to be one of her family’s main sources of income.
Khady’s work day typifies her professionalism. She arrives at her stand at six in the morning, in time to prepare breakfast for students who start class at seven. Khady manages her restaurant throughout the day, noting that the busiest times are at three, when most of her customers come for lunch and five, when students stop by to snack before evening class. Closing shop at seven, Khady then heads to the market to buy produce. She then spends the rest of her evening cooking food for her restaurant, before retreating to bed by ten.
In addition to the long hours, Khady believes the greatest challenge in running a restaurant in Senegal is dealing with the constant price fluctuations. Changes in currency rates and food prices constrain Khady’s ability to budget and project profits effectively. These uncertainties hamper her business’ potential.

    Use of Loan:

As much as she loves cooking at a college, “students always ask me for relationship advice” she jokes, Khady’s business aspirations lie elsewhere. Khady will use Zidisha’s loan to buy a stand at Senegal’s “Conseil Regional de Dakar”. This eight-story government building draws more potential customers than the current venue Khady works in. Additionally, unlike at the college, Senegal’s government building operates throughout the summer. If she can successfully secure the funds to buy this stand, Khady expects her revenues to grow tremendously. In order to reserve the stand and continue promoting her business, Khady believes it is imperative to obtain Zidisha’s loan as soon as possible.
