My name is John Ongai Ombima, a young ambitious man. I am married with two children ages 8 & 4 years old. I was born and brought up in the rural town of Kakamega, in the western province of Kenya. Life was so difficult for us and what was earned couldn't sustain the family. Due to this kind of life, our parents taught us to do anything with our hands in order to earn a living by merit, so we used to work extremely hard and that resulted in my being responsible, not choosy, and self-reliant at a tender age. I also developed a friendly character, which gave me favour with most of the people in our village. I was among the first boys in the village to be considered for jobs. I still embrace the same spirit and I am very social and cooperative.
In 2008, I moved to Nairobi through my cousin, who used to come to the village occasionally and saw how ambitious and zealous I was in whatever thing I did, no matter how small it seemed. I stayed with him for six months, and during this time I worked as a handyman under masons in the neighbourhood in the city.
I wanted to be independent, so I moved from his house to the outskirts of the city, and fortunately I saw an opportunity that looked fairer than the job that I was doing. The place that I moved to was so remote and had challenges with water and electricity.
With the little money I had, I bought a bicycle and began selling drinking water to my neighbors. It was in 2010 that the demand rapidly increased, and I started saving little by little to buy a donkey. It took me time to raise the cash, but I managed. I also bought a cart and it made my work a little more manageable. I urgently need another donkey and cart to boost my business and at least create employment for someone else.
