About Me

My childhood has been a struggle to survive since l am ninth born. I have to do a lot of work from weeding on peoples farms for a fee to selling food staffs to support my mother who was more or less a single parent. I walked for miles to school from basic level to the Junior high school and even at Tertiary I have to be a house help to earn money to support myself but in all these I was able to have Tertiary education because I did not give up hope of becoming independent by working and studying hard. I started this farm from savings made during the time I was teaching as service personnel. I was finding it difficult to get job in public service and a student I thought introduced me to pig farming by lending me three piglets to start with in agreement that when they females deliver I will pay it back with three piglets. That is how it all started.

My Business

I sell piglets and boars because it of high demand especially piglets for starters in pig farming. It is more profitable because I used GH cedis 600 for live stocks and feed, and at the end of half of the year earn at least GH cedis 2,200 as my net profit. With this that I use to pay for my rent, children school fees and pig feeds for the next season which I must say takes bulk of my profit.

With help of Zidisha now I have moved my business to the next stage of given piglets to young needy Junior High School final year students who are interested in pig farming as a way to set them up to earn money to continue their education. I give beneficiaries three piglets for a start only to repay me with the same number of piglets after eighteen months. It is my hope that with Zidisha on board I can help the first identified young up coming Junior High School Graduate to start with feed been added to the piglets I give.

Loan Proposal

This loan will be used to buy the following for feed preparation:
1. Salt $2.50
2. Two bags of milled maize grains $10.60
3. Wheat bran $ 10.60
4. Pig vitamins $5
5. Feed phosphate $10
6. Soybean meal $27. 50
7. Oil seed extracts $7.50
8. Copra cake $15

This loan will help me breed more piglets for the young needy Junior High School graduates as starters to help them to continue their education and at the same time increase my market and profit from 3,500 to 5,000 Ghana cedis.

As part of activities adopted by me to ensure that my mentees are on regular repayment of their loans as well as to ensure good managerial practices and to assist those with payment difficulties as far as their business is concern, I visited Mr. Raphael in his pig farm. He has more healthy pigs. I love the way he managed his farm with the little resources available to him. He had problems with feeding the pigs as grater part of his business capital is channed solely for that purpose. He had good plans for his project. I further adviced him to maintain his all honesty with Zidisha with hopes that Zidisha will not let him down.

    Dear Raphael,
I'm hoping to interest you, and others, in a way that you can reduce the cost of feed by converting manure to worms/compost.
It is quite simple but needs patience!
Email me at [email protected] and I will send a donation to get you started.

Thanks Grahamk for such a wonderful idea and I am more than happy to learn all that will take for me to reduce my cost of operation of which animal feed takes the bulk of it, to maximize my profit. Please let me know the specific information you will need from me to make the donation possible.

Thanks to Zidisha my farm is now growing and now I have been able to add two pupils who are needy but brilliant students to my beneficiaries and are interested in pig farming as a way of earning income to continue their education to the Senior High and possibly tertiary level.
Today Thursday 7th July, 2016, I invited my mentor Mr Evans for familiarization of my farm as part of the tour, he assisted me in the presentation of piglets and feeds to two pupils to set up farms.

I used the loan to purchased feed for my animals and this help the pigs to hit the right kilos I was expecting and also in the long run help me increase my profit. Even though at a point I was facing a land a challenge of relocating my site but as a result the initial investment from Zidisha I was able to cover it and made profit at the of the year to the tune of GH cedis 3,500 which was within my target.
I used this profit to buy materials for a start of a structure for the piglets which costed GH cedis 900 , pay my rent which was due late last year GH cedis 2,080 and the rest was used for the up keep during the festive season.
