About Me

my name is willington obondo, I was born and raised in kisumu county were I schooled to college level, am married and blessed with three children, two boys and one girl.
I am a poultry farmer currently breeding over 4,000 chicken; both broilers and indigenous (kienyeji) chicken.

I started with keeping kienyeji chicken but with the high demand of grade eggs, I decided to breed layers chicken.

As the demand went high, I expanded the farm and I currently collect at least 1,000 eggs daily.

I hope to support my children to achieve their dream and chose carrer of their suit.

My Business

Chicken farming.

I ventured into chicken farming with 500 chickens in 2015.
With an estimated total cost of setting up the farm at approximately 1000 us dollars.

“I started with 500 chicken and when the demand went high i decided to add more. The capital depended on the number of chicken that I started with.

“During those days things like the layers mash were cheaper compared to now.

Their lots of precautions needed to be taken in order to raise chicks and prevent them from diseases outbreaks.

I had to prepare the room very well and keep it warm using electricity because they don’t have mothers that keep them warm. I also had to ensure that they get the right feeds until they grow and they start laying eggs,"

I collects about 1,000 eggs which equals to 30 trays per day.
I also sell chicken droppings to farmers who place orders and use it on their farms.
“I use chicken droppings as manure or sell them to farmers who either use them as manure or use them to feed cows or goats.
“Most farmers like the chicken produce. They work well. A 90-kg bag sells at usd 3 each while the sieved one goes for usd 5.
In my birth place kisumu they make brooding pots at cheaper price I buy in bulk and sell them to other farmers at 6 us dollars making a profit of 2 usd per pot.

However the farm is faced with challenges high cost of feeds and the low market price of produce such as eggs is the main challenge.

Other challenges include diseases outbreaks that, sometimes, can wipe all the birds.

Working with vet doctors as helped me learn on tackling the challenges and remaining profitable.
