My name is Paul Materi born in 1963 in Nairobi area. I am the first born in a family of 7 members. My parents are peasant farmers and live in the Rift Valley region. I am married with one child who is in secondary school I did my primary school course and later joined secondary school. I joined a teacher training college shortly after my secondary school where I graduated as a primary school teacher. I was posted Namanga Primary School where I worked for four years. I later quit the job and started my own business.
I am an active member of my church – Voice of Jesus where I serve as a church minister. This is voluntary work which I normally do on Friday morning and Sundays.
My business entails printing works where I print all kinds of publications. I do publications such as simple hand bills, stationery books, banners etc.
I also do branding in form of printing T-Shirts, mugs and signage. I serve small institutions such as churches and schools as well as large companies.
My turnover is about $1200 per month but most of this money goes into buying of raw materials and labour leaving me with a profit of about $300. Given access to credit I will be able to expand my business by stocking raw material for my printing work. I have employed two casuals who help me in doing this job. I hope to employ them permanently when the business expands.
This is my fourth loan at Zidisha. I am glad the previous loans have contributed to the growth of my business in a big way. As indicated on my profile, I do printing work which involves many stages. The first stage is design work which is done by a typesetter. This is a skilled person who uses design software to produce the required art work. I normally outsource this work and this causes long delays because the designers are always busy with loads of work to clear.
The solution to this problem is having my own computer with the design software as this will increase efficiency in what I do. I intend to hire designers on part-time basis before settling for a permanent one once the business grows to sustain his/her salary. A computer capable of doing the job will cost around USD 80. I will spend a further USD 100 for design software and use the balance to buy paper for printing.
This investment will hopefully catapult my business to great heights and I kindly ask you to consider funding me once more. Thanks.
