My name is Kennedy Odongo born 40 years ago in Siaya County. Siaya is in the western side of Kenya where the main occupation is farming. I was born in a remote area where modern things like electricity and cars were nonexistent. My parents were very determined to take us through school with the hope of breaking the yoke of poverty in the family.
I did my primary school education for 8 years and then proceeded to secondary school where I studied for four more years. After my secondary education, I was sent to live with my uncle in Mombasa at the same time looking for gainful employment. Luckily I got a job as a clerk in a law firm where I worked for 7 years.
Unfortunately the firm closed down and with the savings I had made, I started a small business of manufacturing soaps and detergents.
I am married with a wife and children.
My business entails ‘manufacturing’ soaps and detergents using basic tools and chemicals which are obtained from the local market. These products are popular with the low income people who are very many in our neighborhood. The products are slowly gaining acceptance by the middle class and other institutions.
I make an average net profit of about $350 per month and use this money for my family’s upkeep. Due to growing financial demands, I am planning to branch off to poultry keeping so as supplementing my income. I intend to start keeping indigenous chicken due to their high demand in urban area. I have already made arrangement to get my first batch of chicks but I have run out cash to build a coop for them.
As mentioned above, the I intend to start my poultry farming to supplement my income. . If loaned, I will use this money to build a coop for my chicks. The material and labor for making this structure will cost me about $120 and therefore, with this loan and a little bit from my savings, I will be able to accomplish my mission. I am hoping to make extra profit and also a good source of food from this added venture.
