My name is Damaris Okwuosa, I am a graduate teacher, a mother and a small scale business woman. I also engage in charity work whenever I have funds. Am the 6th child in my family. Raised by my mom. I got interested in business to be able to substitute the income that I get from my day job. This has helped to supplement the needs of my children and some of the people who benefit from the charity donations that I am able to make. I enrolled and completed a business mentorship program sponsored by UNITAR AND ABSA. Through this program I was mentored and able to manage my small business well and balance it well with my day job.
I have been selling small fish,( omena) or dagaa in my neighborhood. I do this on small scale. I get a profit of about Ksh7,000/-per month. This business helps me to manage expenses in my house, am able to provide basic utilities for my children. I also started a new side business; food related. I prepare snacks(mandazi) for school going children ,these snacks sell very well in the morning. This has helped me to expand my income a little bit and to cushion me in the tough economic times.
Am also gaining more experience on how to grow my business. I hope that in the near future I shall be able to expand my business and get moreopportunities and an Increased customer base.
I am a graduate teacher, I teach in a secondary school in Murang'a county. I teach Geography as one of my subjects and recently I just concluded a topic on Forestry. I have decided to raise funds and encourage my learners to plant more trees in an effort to manage and conserve our environment. Within the month of July we have been able to plant some trees and am sure with more funds we can do a lot to increase our vegetation cover. I believe that this will enable my young leaners to appreciate the meaning of environmental conservation. The funds I get from Zidisha will help me buy tree seedlings, I intend to acquire about 100 trees, and buy manure and insecticides to keep away pests that may destroy the young trees.
