My names are John Karanja Wangui born in the year 1981, in Ukunda, Mombasa County of the Coast Province in Kenya. I went through my early Primary education in Magede. I am married with three children. I do engage in dairy and cash crop farming and am also working at with the Public service at the registration of persons as a Clerk at the County offices. My farming is not specialized as I greatly depend on the season plus what will fetch good money in the market. I therefore practice crop rotation ranging from planting crops such as Potatoes, cabbages among others. My wife and engaged labourers do most of the manual work since I am working but over the weekends I am greately Involved. I have a passion for computers and have been developing softwares using Visual Basic and in future I will be doing Programming.
Currently, am working at the County offices as a Clerk, besides I am a farmer dealing in cash crop and dairy farming in Ukunda. I grow wide range of cash crops like potatoes, peas, carrots and cabbages. I am also a member of Tawala farmers SACCO where we sell our milk and get paid at the end of the month.
Collections or income per month range from USD 12 to USD 18 per month. This after deducting the expenses amount to USD 6 per month as net income the amount that I add to my salary at my work place for family upkeep and paying school fees for my first born child who schools at Magede Academy.
Besides dairy farming, I from time to time do computer services for my friends at a fee, i own a desktop computer and a deskjet printer, so those undertaking their research, typesetting and scanning services mostly from friends and workmates do engage my services.
I intend to borrow zidisha loan to construct a simple water dam for water collection so as to increase my farming activities. Farming depends mostly on rains which sometimes may fail. The loan will go towards purchase of polythene bag that will be laid at the basement fo retaining water. This will cost about USD 100 and labour plus other expenses for digging up the dam about USD 8. I will top up what I will get from Zidisha with my personal savings. With this I will be able to boost farming by ensuring that all season I have water for irrigation. I live in a place that does well in both dairy and cash crop farming particulary potatoes, peas, cabbages among others but sometimes unreliable rainfall is a set back I want also to plant more feeder crops for my cows so as to boost milk production. From my work place I have net income of USD 150 and will keep part of my personal savings to go towards this project. With this I will be in a position to concentrate with my farming activity and improve on my income. With the help of my wife I will able to increase my farming activity. I do also have plans to purchase a simple water pump that will enable me do some irrigation to my crops particularly vegetables and cabbages which will be done directly from the simple dam.
