Hello, my name is Dan Cembrola, one of Zidisha’s Kenya Client Relationship Managers. I am currently visiting Zidisha borrowers in Nakuru and its outskirts.

School was still in session at 4:00pm at Ann’s nursery school. Her enrollment is now at 45 students between the ages of three and six. The walls of the main classroom are lined with chalkboards, posters with basic arithmetic, and English and Swahili alphabets and pronunciations.
Ann employs one other teacher from the village of Salgaa Rongai where the school is located. When I visited though, Ann was somehow independently instructing all 45 students, each one paying close attention to her as she scrolled on the chalkboard.

The village of Salgaa Rongai is growing rapidly as many Kenyans have flocked to the area to work on the sprawling flower fields. This influx of workers and their families have created the need for more schools. Ann owns the plot of land where her current school is located. She is building a second classroom on the ample space on her land. This second structure will be able to accommodate an additional sixty students. Once the classroom is completed, Ann plans to hire at least two additional additional teachers.

Thanks to her commitment to youth education and with the help of her Zidisha loans, Ann will soon be educating 100 local students and will have created three new jobs in the village of Salgaa Rongai.
