My name is James Gatimu I was born on11th April 1974 at Nairutia in Nyeri county being the third born in a family of 5. I attended Nyaithee primary school from 1981 to 1990. I later joined Aguthi secondary school for my o levels. After school I joined Nyeri technical college in basic of agriculture. I was employed by a large scale farmer in in Nyahuru which is far from my home for 6 years. It is in this farm that I was able to very much advance my farming skills. In 2010 I went back to my parents home who had relocated to Gema farm at Hot springs in the out skirts of Gilgil town and started commercial farming and in 3 years down the line I was able to purchase a piece of land in the same area, where I do the same to date. I look forward to be a zidisha member.
My business is basically farming at my farm in Gema scheme at hot springs in the outskirts of Gilgil town. The sheme is very popular because we get water for irrigation from the nearby spring which supply’s water throughout the year I grow green vegetables, kales, cabbages, potatoes, onions, tomatoes and more recently I am growing strawberries, asparagus and mushrooms which is become more popular among many communities in Kenya. I started commercial farming after I realized there was a great demand for these produce in all urban areas where no food is grown. I also carry out dairy farming. I have 6 milk cows which gives me between 18 and 22 liters of milk daily. I sell my produce at farm gate prices to retailers who came to correct from as far as Nairobi. For the milk it is collected every morning by Brookside dairies were I am paid at end month. The income I get from the farm is substantially good because I am able to take care of my immediate family and to educate my children and support my aging parents. I have also been able to build a house where I live in. The only challenge I face is luck of a proper cooler to preserve all my produce from going into waste during hot seasons. With zidisha platform I will be able to overcome these challenges.
The loan that am aplying of150 Dollars will surely help me to buy a water tank to help me on feeding my livestock when the season gets worse like now Iam realy suffering for the lack of enough water I have to purchase water from the tankers which is very costly. hoping zidisha will help me to do this as it has been asssisting me earlier Thanks zidisha for where you have taken me from KEEPUP Zidisha.
