I am the first born in a family of three. I grew up at the slope of Mt. Kenya and throughout my childhood, I watched my parents who are peasant farmers on our small farm struggle to make ends meet. After completing my secondary school education I knew that i had to do something with myself if at all I would make it out of the village and also pave way for my sisters to get the same education I got. It is this that motivated me to venture into small businesses. I started off with working as a constructional worker earning 1.5 dollars in a day. My enthusiasm to go to get a college education never ended and i was determined to save up enough to help my parents take me to school. It was not until 2013 that a friend of mine introduced me to small scale agribusiness that my life started taking a different turn. Since then I have struggled to do agribusiness ranging from poultry keeping to bee keeping. However, these were not enough to raise enough money to take me through college education. My enthusiasm has not died off and I am more determined to start schooling by September this year. It is this that drove me to venture into the new industry of pig rearing that is more income generating.
I started my business of keeping and selling pigs a year ago. having bought a single piglet at 35 dollars I reared it and sold it at 100 dollars in just 5 months. it is this that has motivated me to think of buying more pigs at least two one male and the other female. that way I can mate them and sell the piglets that are facing an increase in demand. Today just 5 months since I bought my piglet, the price of a single piglet has gone up by 25% and therefore making it a viable business. The pig manure is also very much on demand in my area due to its fine nature.
Upon receipt of the loan, i will spend it tom purchase an extra piglet so as to increase my number of pigs. This way i can produce more manure for sale and also increase the number of pigs I see at the end of the year. I will buy a male pig since i already have two female ones and hence they can be able to reproduce.
