Hello Zidisha Community,
I am a young man that grew up in the 'slum' of Githurai, and throughout my childhood I had always been a child that loved learning new stuff and very curious on technology. My parents were obviously unable to satisfy all my wants, but one of the biggest thing that helped shape my is the availability of a computer.
My dad was blessed to work for an advertising agency painting signs and walls for them, and that eventually grew to a point where he would afford to get an old computer (1997 PowerMac G3) for cheap to do his work from. He let me play with it occasionally, which made me learn a lot on computers and technology. From there on things spiraled and I taught myself how to edit videos, and become making money from it while in secondary school.
Video editing has been my occupation for the last 14 years, and without the challenges I went during my childhood, to the opportunity to learn a life changing skill, I honestly wouldn't be able to be where I'm at today. I have been able to sustain my family needs without having to travel afar and being away like my father did while we were growing up, and I want to be able to build the same environment for my children, where they'll be able to thrive doing what they love.
I started a media company, and with the skills I had in video editing and videography, I also started a couple of YouTube channel as a hobby, documenting DIY projects I do as well as small projects I do for a school my parents started, and I'm growing them with my vision being creating passive income to be able to give back to the community. I also have plans on supporting two of the public primary schools in my vicinity with free internet, and have already started on the process of providing them with free computers to help give the young kids the same opportunity I had to interact with technology at an early age, to help shape their future and of the community at large.
I mainly work from home, doing video editing for clients remotely. I also built a media company that helps me get video coverage clients as well as other services. With my experience in editing, I am constantly able to get clients despite video editing being a saturated occupation lately. I am however in the process of setting up a Wireless Internet Service Provider (WISP) in my community as there is a very high demand of quality internet with little to no fulfilment.
I chose this business from the passion I have with technology, and especially creating content that will touch people's lives either through providing them with entertainment, or encouragement. I have low costs at the moment as I am living fully off-grid and only have internet bills, as well as a long term loan I secured to help me purchase land and build a home for my family. I want the internet business to be able to provide income to do more. I intend on using the profits from my business to scale and go beyond my community, build a larger space for my growing family, and my end goal being building a school that will be technology centered as well as providing affordable education for the community, which will be an extension of my parents' school which is at the Githurai 'slum'
I will use the funds provided to facilitate buying a new mouse to aid in my video editing work. The mouse I currently have is old and cuts in and out while I'm working making me slower in my work as well as frustrating me. I want to buy a new one that has more features to even help me improve my workflow than before with the added inputs it will provide.
