My name is Anne Wanjiru. I was born a fifth child in a family of six children. My father was a public officer and my mother a peasant farmer. I saw my father work very hard to put food on the table and raise school fees for his six children since his pay was inadequate. It was through his small business that my father was able to put as through high school.
Now an adult and single mother of one, I've noticed how hard it is to live a comfortable life in our current economy. It is only in business that one can attain financial freedom. Through business, women and youth have empowered themselves and others. I've realized that with business one can go far. It is for this reason that I started a business selling second hand clothes .
I started my business almost a year ago selling cosmetics and second hand clothing. I chose this kind of business because I am passionate about fashion and looking good/smart at all times. At first I sourced for a shop to sell my second hand clothes which was doing well until I got a job at a college in my area. This meant that I employ someone to take care of the clothes business. I later fell while hanging an item on a wall and broke my right leg, I was put a plaster on the leg and stayed in the house for four months. This was very challenging for me since mobility was a problem. I later resumed my full time job and was only able to managed the business in the evenings. I later decided to close down the shop and sell the clothes to my colleagues and students at the college during my free time i.e lunch break and weekends.
Although I cannot compare my current profit from what I was earning while I was in full time business, I do not complain as I am getting a monthly salary from my employer and something small from my side hustle - the business.
In addition, I decided to advance in my career and that meant I go back to college for an undergraduate degree. I have already been admitted and pursuing a course in Bachelor of Business and Office Management at a local university. I am now in my second year of study and I intend to use the Zidisha loan to pay part of my school fees.
I work as a full time secretary in the public sector. I would like to advance my skills as and my current pay is not enough to take me to University.
This loan will help me register for a Degree course in secretarial studies at a local university and therefore advance my skills. After acquiring the degree, i will be able to advance in my career and this will enable me cater for my needs and that of my son.
