About Me

I'm Nsiah Vincent from Ghana, When I was about to complete my Senior High School my father lost his job and it became a problem for me to start my University Education. My results came and I had passed so I had to start school, I applied for the University and started to work until I had a letter from the school that I've been admitted and since then I've been supporting myself at the University level from there. I'm in my third year at the University of Ghana and things are very difficult for me now since our economy is also not in good shape.

My Business

When I started to work, I got a work as ashop attendant and that has been the work I have been doing when I came home from Senior High School. I have been working as a shop attendant since then at that shop in Accra at Tudu, Accra -Central, which I use receive GH¢150.00 every month. But with this, when school resumes I stop and go back when school is on vacation.
I am now pursuing my first degree program at the University of Ghana and in my third year.
I am in need of laptop that will aid in my studies and also the pay for my fees for the semester this year.

Loan Proposal

I will buy a laptop and pay my fees for the semester , these will enable me to save time on frequently visiting cafe and also help me save my documents direct on my laptop , thence creating convenience for my studies at school.
More-so, i still have arrears of school fees of which i will defray upon access to this loan.
I hope my hope to continue my schooling will be achieved with a quick funding to help my stay on campus again.
Thank you,

    Hi Vincent,

I was looking at your loan. It looks like the cost is $357 to borrow $644.

That seems rather a high cost, and it surprised me.

How are things going for you?

    Thanks
    Carolyn in Vancouver

thank you very much for your concern , i am doing fine and i must admit the good i benefit from the loan with regards to my studies
actually i could not keep up with my plans to repay the loan as i have to settle with some academics., i am sure the delays and prolong terms might cost the this rate

Thank you, Vincent. It's nice to hear from you. Actually, the best part of Easter was sharing it with the Zidisha family. :) Our relatives (mine and my husband's) live very far from us, and we rarely ever get to have visits (once a year, at the most, usually at Christmas-time). So, when I was sharing our "Easter tulips" with them electronically, I decided to do the same here with the Zidisha family, as well. I'm glad you liked the gift. :)

Such a beautiful campus! Jealous of you, Taylor, that you've gotten to visit it and some of the Zidisha borrowers, too - and at least twice in only five weeks' time. Lucky you! :)
    =====================================================
"Quiet and thoughtful – he would rather be reading...than at a big party." This always was me, too, when a student (and still is). However, I think if there were a party with all the Zidisha admin, lenders, and borrowers I've "met" so far, I definitely would make an exception for that. :)

"Vincent has used his Zidisha loans to pay academic fees and recently to purchase a laptop for his studies. Before, his only access to a computer was at the computer center on campus, a good half-hour’s walk away from his residence hall. Now he can do his work anywhere, enabling him to better fit schoolwork into his schedule and more easily work on his projects." This is great to hear. :)
    =====================================================
Wishing you a Happy Easter weekend, Taylor, and the same very best wishes to Vincent, as well. - Laurie

    Dear Lenders,

Last week I finally got to visit the campus of the University of Ghana in Legon, a northern suburb of Accra, where I met with Vincent and a few other students.

Vincent is pursuing his bachelor’s degree in history and archaeology and on track to graduate in 2016. Afterward, he plans to return for his master’s. He especially likes learning about the African diaspora and the chance he gets at university to talk to international students about their experiences. Quiet and thoughtful – he would rather be reading (his favorite author is Chinua Achebe) than at a big party. Of the opportunities for exploration on campus, he says, “Every moment as a student you discover something.”

Vincent has used his Zidisha loans to pay academic fees and recently to purchase a laptop for his studies. Before, his only access to a computer was at the computer center on campus, a good half-hour’s walk away from his residence hall. Now he can do his work anywhere, enabling him to better fit schoolwork into his schedule and more easily work on his projects.

As we talk, he gives me a tour of the university. We start at the centrally located Balme library (pictured), passing through Vincent’s favorite spots to study and the African studies library which displays, behind cases, the University’s collection of old and rare volumes. Outside, attractive white buildings with terracotta roofs make up most of the campus with expansive trees lining the streets, providing shade and a distinctly collegial feel. Finally, we stop by the Kwame Nkrumah Institute of African Studies, one of Vincent’s buildings, and take a look at its museum of Ashanti artifacts.

I know Vincent is grateful for the support he has received from his Zidisha lenders in allowing him to pursue his education and the opportunity to interact with lenders around the world.

Vincent, thank you so much for taking the time to meet with me and letting me wander around campus! It was such a pleasure and we wish the best of luck in your studies.

    Hi Vincent,
I found you through our mutual friend, Isaac Baccah. I saw in his profile that you are his Zidisha mentor. Of course, I am following you, as well. I tried to post this under your December 13, 2014, post (under the other picture of you in the library, the one that needs to be rotated), but apparently there's a glitch in the system because that post did not "take". Anyway, if you're able to access the following website from where you are, you can rotate photos online here: www.resize.it/advanced-onli... - (here's their FAQ page, too: www.resize.it/faq.html). Btw, I love the library photos; those remind me of my many trips (on foot) to the campus library when I was a student (seems like only just "yesterday" but, really, that was a *long* time ago). Enjoy those years, some of the very best ones in life! :-)
    Regards,
    Laurie
P.S.: I, too, self-financed my entire university education, in much the same way you are doing now (although it was my then-husband who was our household provider, for all else). I received grants and scholarship which covered most of the tuition for all of my full-time semesters, but it did not cover any of the tuition for any of my part-time semesters (you can see a little more about that here: www.zidisha.org/loan/13521#...), and it also did not cover any of the other costs, such as lab. fees, textbooks, etc., so I also worked full-time in summers (doing paperwork in an office of a car dealership) and then stopped that during the semesters, but they always hired me back in summer. During some of my semesters, I did a little bit of part-time work as a French tutor, and as a French Conversational Workshop Leader. But my priority was studying, so I did not work a lot during the semesters. One summer, my last summer before graduating, I did a French-immersion program (four courses for six weeks) at a French-speaking university in the Province of Québec, Canada, through an exchange program with my university. While I was studying in Québec, I also worked as the administrative student liaison between the two universities. That was the only summer I did not do work in the office at the car dealership. And during the part of the vacation from school when I was not studying in Québec, I worked doing telephone fundraising (in English and in French) for a local ETV (Educational TV) station. So, I especially like to help others who also know what it is like, for whatever reason, not to have a university education entirely or mostly handed to them by their parents and/or other relatives. (My husband also put himself entirely through university, both undergraduate and graduate school. He was thirty when he began his undergraduate studies and forty by the time he earned his Ph.D., and he also did that all without the usual financial gifts for tuition, textbooks, travel, etc., that most students receive from parents and/or other relatives.) Vincent, you have our understanding and our best wishes! :-)

I am embarking on a field trip organized by my field school to a village to do ethnographic research due to the course I offer in Archaeology/Anthropology.
This has affected my schedule but I am sure I will be on track with my proposed plan to honour my lenders for their contribution to making my education a reality.
THank you for everything once more.
