I live in my husband’s house, he is a merchant, and I have five sisters and four brothers who live with my parents. We don’t rent our home, the house we live in is owned by my husband in unit #17 of Parcelles Assainies. My parents are originally from Touba. I learned of Zidisha through group members who gave us information and assistance to register to the platform. I am an entrepreneurial women. I came to Dakar when I married; my husband has lived in Dakar for fifteen years and he manages a boutique with various types of merchandise. I am a member of a women’s group focusing on the improvement of our neighborhood which is unit #17 of Parcelles Assainies. This women’s organization is venue that allows me to engage in solidarity and mutually beneficial activities, and we all work to improve the living conditions of women and to promote good community relations at the heart of our neighborhood. Besides these women’s organizations, I belong to tontines (group investment programs) and the most important tontine in which I participated is located in unit #17. I have brothers and sisters and I am part of a large family with aunts, cousins, half-brothers and half-sisters.

My Business

Aware of my illiterate condition, early in my life I looked for revenue-generating activities that would ensure a better future. That is how I started with a small sum to start trading, and little by little my profits and scope of trading grew. I am a merchant and I sell African fabrics, dyed fabric, and cotton fabrics, as well as various types of accessories for women. I rent a space in the market of unit #17 and one of my sisters works with me. I am also in the poultry business and raise chicks for 40 days and sell them to other merchants in the market of unit #17 of Parcelles Assainies. I sell the chickens for 2500 FCFA a unit and the average revenue per chick is 1500 FCFA. I plan to use the loan from Zidisha to increase the quantity of chicks as well as invest in buying better materials including watering basins, feeding cribs, and improving the installation of my hen house. I put in place a hen house that will have the capacity to house 100 chicks. My enterprise will consist of a poultry business, I will buy chicks for 500 FCFA a unit that I will raise for 90 days to resell them at 3500 FCFA a unit. For the nutrition of the 100 chicks I spend on average 10000 FCFA. I make a revenue of 200000 FCFA during a period of three months. This activity is profitable and will allow me to reimburse the loan that I requested from Zidisha.

Loan Proposal

The loan will be used for a poultry business, as well as, the purchase of six bags of food for raising chickens for 90000 FCFA and the purchase of 200 chicks for 100000 FCFA, and also for vaccination and vitamin costs of 10000 FCFA. I will reserve the 30000 FCFA for unexpected expenses for the project. The chicks will be raised for a period of 2 month to be resold at 3000 FCFA a chicken. I plan to have 4 operation cycles during the year to generate a the necessary revenue to reimburse the loan.

I invested the loan in a poultry project, but the first attempt came with a high chick mortality rate, due to an epidemic that occurred in my barn, as I understand. This is why I'm writing you to ask if there is another possibility to receive new funding so that I can invest and restart my business and adjust repayments. I am really in a situation of bankruptcy, which is why I have difficulties repaying this loan.

      Hi Binta,

I am very sorry that your chicks died, and that you are having financial troubles. I'm not sure if Zidisha has a way for you to put your repayments on hold for a while, but I will understand if you cannot make your full payments every month. I do ask, however, that you continue to pay what you can every month, even if it is not the full amount, so that we know that you intend to pay it back as you are able.

On account of the slow commercialization of my chickens and the high mortality from my first aviculture enterprise that I undertook when I received my second loan, I foresee that I will need to prolong my repayment period in order to ensure that I make regular payments while also sorting my affairs and fixing the economic situation of my business. For this reason, I would like to request a longer loan period from my dear borrowers in order to reduce my monthly repayments.

    Hi Binta,

I'd be happy to loan if I can understand more how the business works.

Is it correct that you currently raise chicks for 40 days and sell them on at 2500Francs after 40 days and you wish to expand to raise them for longer to make a bigger profit?

So you will buy 100 chicks for 50000 FCFA (US$103) and over the 3 months spend on average 10000 FCFA ($20) on feed? The remainder ( around $1680) will be spent on a hen house, basins and cribs. So the loan is essentially for capital equipment plus the initial purchase of chicks?

Your estimated profit is 200000 ($412) in 3 months and from this you will cover your cost of living, buy more chicks and feed in the next cycle to repeat the profit and repay the loan. Is that all about right?

    Thanks
    Greg

Hi gwells. Agree it would be good to see some realistic numbers. Perhaps profits from the fabric business factor in somehow.

In the time I've been a lending member, for some reason Senegalese women have a very poor track record for repayment. No more unless there's a solid business plan in place.

      Hello Greg,
When I translated the loan application, the only totally untranslated part was the "Purpose of Loan" section (I touched up the first two sections a little). Oftentimes, I've found, borrowers don't rewrite the "My Story" and "About My Business" sections when they apply for a second loan. My point is that the prices might not be the same as they were when she first wrote them.

Still, this seems like a reasonable loan option. But then, I usually only lend in small amounts. I've had a better track record from Senegalese borrowers than some of the Kenyan ones, but that is just my experience.

I would like to have a month of grace. I don't want to waste time, but the chickens are not yet grown and I spend a lot of money for food, so I want to repay at market time in August. I intend to settle my account next month after I have time to sell my products.
