My name is Lydia Nyawira Waigwa and I was born in Nyeri County in a rural area. This is where coffee farming is practised and I spent my childhood years in school - both primary and secondary while at the same time helping my parents with domestic chores.
I later got married and relocated to Mombasa where we live till today with my husband. I have been blessed with two children - a girl aged 16 and a boy aged 14 who are still in school. From an early age I have always to become a successful business woman and the desire is still burning in me.
I would like to become a shoe distributor with a large territory covering the entire Mombasa town and beyond. I have worked very hard towards this goal and slowly but surely I know I will get there.
I deal with selling shoes in Mombasa town. I run a small stall in the middle of the town which serves as my outlet. I started this business shortly after I arrived in Mombasa town because I saw an opportunity and decided to give it a trial. People around here were only used to getting their shoes from large stores but I created an alternative for them by getting closer to where they are.
The business faces a number of challenges - the biggest one being importation of cheap shoes from China. I deal with shoes which are made locally and they are of superior quality to the Chinese type but slightly expensive. Due to harsh economic conditions that most people face, they prefer the cheaper option despite the poor quality.
I normally target people who are on low budgets since they are the majority in my area of operation. I am hoping to expand this business and be a supplier of shoes of other small scale businessmen who are very many in town. I am happy that the business has served for the last 15 years and it has supported my needs for all this time.
I make an average of about $120 per month from this business.
The main purpose of this loan is to buy stock for my shop. I will be able to buy half a dozen pair of shoes with this money. In my business, the more variety of shoes you have the better because this attracts more customers to the business.
With increased stock and variety this will mean more cash flow into the business and this will accelerate growth due to increased sales. This will lead to a better life for my family as I will be able to afford more household items which are beyond my reach for now.
