My name is James Opany. I am 43 years old having been born in Mombasa City which is the second largest city in Kenya. Mombasa is a port city and my father used to work at Kenya Ports Authority as a clerk. He later retired and went back to Western Kenya which is his rural home. By then was all grown up and I had cleared my college education and I decided not to follow him to his rural home.
I trained as an accountant after my secondary eduction and luckily got a job as an accountant in a local auditing firm. I worked there for about 10 years and then the company closed down. With my terminal benefits, I decided to set up a business selling food products such as sausages, eggs, chicken as well as soft drinks.
I am married with two kids aged 16 and 9 years.
I deal with sale of food products such as sausages, eggs, chicken as well as soft drinks. I get my supplies from Farmers Choice who are the leading processors of these products in Kenya. I got to know them well because they were our clients at the auditing firm that I was working for before it closed down.
I make daily sales of about $60 with a daily profit of about $12. I use this money to support my family and for business expansion. Despite the relatively good sales volumes, I go get some challenges since there are many competing needs for the money generated by the business and this makes expansion very difficult or even replacing faulty equipment.
I started rearing chicken two years ago and the business has proved to be a huge success since I sell the poultry products from this lot. I however want to expand this area so that I may produce enough birds to sell at the outlet.
For this reason, I need a helping hand in form of credit and I feel Zidisha is a perfect partner in my endeavor due to their friendly loan terms.
My business mainly deals with sale of raw sausages, eggs and soft drinks. I also introduced chicken on a very small scale with an aim of testing the market. The results are encouraging and I now want to go full throttle in this venture.
One full chicken costs about USD 5 and with this loan, I will be able to stock of two dozen chicken at a total cost of USD 120. This quantity is my estimate for two days demand of this product. I have made contacts with local hotels and homesteads and they have promised to buy from me when I get into this business fully.
I will use the remaining amount of about USD 75 to buy chicken organs such as liver and gizzards which are regarded as delicacies by the local community. My hope is that this new venture will expand and ultimately be able to supply big hotels in town.
I expect to increase my sales by about 30% which will see my profitability grow by almost the same margin.
