My name is Mercy Wambui. I was born in Muranga county I went attended my primary and secondary school there and later migrated to Mombasa where I went to live with a relative. I come from a family of 6 and I am the first born. My mother is a single parents and she raised us single handedly through doing menial jobs. i got employed as a house help for two years and later decided to start my own business from my savings.
I am a single mother of three children - two boys and a girl abed between 10 - 16 years and they are all in school. i am a hardworking person and this has enabled me raise my family in spite of many odds that I face as a single parent.
I currently deal with supplying 'over the counter' medicines to shops around Mombasa and the surrounding areas. My main area of specialty is painkillers which move very fast in this densely populated area. I buy them from big stores in cartons and then sell them in dozens in retail outlets.
This is one area that many people have not ventured and the business is quite profitable. I am able to make a net profit of $250 per month and I hoping to expand my business further and I am optimistic that my sales will rise further.
In spite of the relative success that I have made in my business, I do encounter challenges - key among them, slow business growth due to lack of finances. Being a sole bread winner, there are many competing needs for the profit I make and I only spare a small amount of money for business expansion. Given credit from Zidisha, I will be able to step up my growth curve within a short time.
Painkillers tablets is a big business in Kenya. This is partly due to the fact that you buy the tabs over the counter and from any general shop. I deal with sale of these tablets and I intend to expand my territory to cover far areas so as to maximize my returns.
If given this loan, I will use it to buy 12 big boxes of paracetamol based painkillers and histamines. Histamines are largely used in Kenya to control different types of allergies. This will cost me USD 180 and I will use the balance to cover my transport costs.
This will be a milestone in my business since I have always wished to expand my area of operation.
