Dear lenders.
I received part of the amount that I was expecting. I was expecting to receive Ksh 153 744 but I received ksh 53 744 through M-pesa. The reference for the M-pesa transaction is JF16HHV5JW. This transaction was made on 1st June 2015. My plan for this loan is to buy a piece of land. so far I have found a piece of land which is 1 acre and is being sold at Ksh 140 000. I have already paid a deposit of ksh 50 000 and hope that when I receive the remaining balance from Zidisha, I will be able to clear the balance and the title deed will then be processed under my name.

Once again I take this opportunity to thank the zidisha family for having faith and confidence in me. I promise you that I will never let you down.

Hello, my name is Traci Yoshiyama, Zidisha’s Kenya Client Relationship Manager. I am currently residing in Mugaa, visiting Zidisha borrowers in nearby villages.

To earn a living in Kenya, many people stretch themselves thin with having the responsibility of working more than one job. The skills they acquire throughout their life are not only in one trade, but in many. This rings true for Veronicah Kamanja. I met Veronicah my very first day in Mugaa, for she is the Mugaa Secondary School accountant. Although she is an accountant by day, she also owns and manages a salon in a nearby village, Miti Mingi.

Veronicah is not from Mugaa or Miti Mingi, but has a home and shamba in Njeru, about an hours walk away. Dressed in her professional attire, she makes the hours walk every morning to get to work. Although Veronicah now works in Mugaa and Miti Mingi, the foundation of her salon began in Njeru. She described it is as a simple business in her house where she tended to schoolgirls, doing their hair and painting their fingernails. She then heard about Zidisha from Mr. Mwaura, the principal of Mugaa Secondary School.

Through her first Zidisha loan, Veronicah was able to rent a space in Miti Mingi, buy a hair dryer, employ two women, and stock her shop with accessories to sell to her customers. Being one of only three salons in Miti Mingi, Veronicah’s business does well, especially during a good harvest, when many of her customers can afford the luxury of braiding their hair, getting a manicure, or the most popular request of putting in artificial hair. As I take pictures of Veronicah’s salon, I could not help but notice a sticker posted on her shop salon mirror, “Men are as old as they feel, women are as old as they look,” a perfect mantra for this charming salon.

Veronicah is now repaying her second loan, which has allowed her to stock her shop with more items to sell to her customers and add one more hair dryer. Being a mother of four primary school children, both loans have also helped Veronicah pay for her children’s school fees. With the help of Zidisha, group loans, accounting, farming, and running her salon, Veronicah graciously and proudly expresses her primary goal of providing her children with quality education.

Upon our return back to Mugaa Secondary School, Veronicah mentions how encouraging the lenders of Zidisha have been. She feels empowered by the trust people have in her and is forever grateful for the opportunity to be “put so much ahead”.

Veronicah owns a hair salon at Miti Mingi Center and lives at Njeru. Throughout our conversation, she kept reiterating, “Imetuinua!” (Zidisha has lifted us!). A kind of shy lady, Veronicah giggles occasionally as she talks about her flourishing business. The Zidisha loan helped her to acquire specialized equipment (e.g blow dryer), thereby automatically gaining an edge over her competitors. She has employed a lady who is a breadwinner of two kids. Veronicah spends a fair amount of her profit on bringing up her 4 children and also expanding her business. For future plans, she intends to venture into the livestock and butchery business.
