    Hello Lenders,

My name is Andrew Weber and I recently served as a Zidisha Client Relationship Manger in Kenya. There I paid a visit to Mary at her home in a village outside the city of Mtwapa on the coast. Mary has endured a difficult life but continues to face her challenges with an admirable level of courage and determination. Her husband has passed away, leaving her to raise three children aged 4, 8, and 10 on her own.

Currently Mary scrapes by through operating a small restaurant (or “hotel” as they call them in Kenya). Her hotel serves a variety of breakfast pastries in the morning and rice, beans, and maize for lunch. She buys all of her supplies from a wholesale store in the nearby city of Mtwapa. She has operated the business for 11 years and has many regular customers who swear by her cooking. She is currently only able to save a small amount of money, so looks forward to uses the money from this and future Zidisha loans to by a motor bike so she can carry a greater supply of food back from the nearby wholesale store. It is possible for her to expand her menu and increase her customer base, but she has simply lacked the funds to afford transportation for this increased supply. Mary looks forward to her next loan when she should be able to afford a new motor bike.
