My names are Njuguna Kamau Gichohi 33 years old and am a residence of Naivasha town that is off Nakuru-Nairobi highway in Plot number 6578 house number 7.I am the second born in our family of nine members and my brothers and sisters have been employed in various companies here in Naivasha and some in Nairobi and Nakuru. I graduated nine years ago with a diploma in business administration and later on I ventured into farming where i started a dairy goats project in my place. I realized that farming is a business just like other businesses here in Kenya. Goats meat is very nutritious and very important mainly to farmers with small lands. Its milk is a very nutritious product thats why it has a high demand. I started out this project in 1997 and since then i have been excelling. A good business requires a good planning so as to keep the business running. It can become impossible to sustain the purchase of the inputs if not properly planned. I always keep a record for me to know whether i am making profits or loss. With that am able to trace the problem with my business. My main aim in my project is to have superior animals with high production. Since Exotic breeds are highly sensitive to climates, environments differences and local diseases from where they originally came from the best plan i use is to cross breed with our local breeds to improve the local; goats' milk production and their tolerance of local conditions.
I give my goats clean water and enough mineral salts.I keep the mineral block dry. Most of my goats produces an average of 4litres of milk a day. Female goats are ready for mating between the age of 6 and 12 months, depending on the breed and nutrition and a female goat that has not been mated comes on heat after every 21 days on average, stays on heat for 24 hours and since one buck is adequate for 30 females hence i don't keep a male for a small flock.Successful breeding depends on careful record keeping and observation of females to know when they come on heat and not waste time on when to mate them.
