I was born in 1977 in Kakamega County and joined primary school at Museno until 1994; thereafter I joined Museno Secondary until 1998. I traveled to Mombasa County in search of job opportunities, where I started working as an unskilled labourer in construction sites. The job was kind of difficult; therefore, I decided to start saving little by little so as to start my own business. I saved about Ksh. 5,000 ($48) and bought a shaving machine, rented a premise, and ventured into the hair cutting business, which has sustained me til now. I have been able to foot my bills and pay school fees for my children, even through numerous challenges, especially when inflation bites.
I offer haircut services to my customers, but due to competition the pricing has to be quite appealing, besides offering services like washing the head with detergent after shaving -- simple things so that customers have a nice experience when they visit my premise. I had grown to like this business ever since I could visit my uncle, who used to own one, and learn a few skills for myself. I usually make a profit of about Ksh. 600 ($6) per day, which increases during weekends and holidays. With Zidisha, I hope to start selling things like school bags, toys, shoes, etc. (which customers usually ask for) to boost my profitability both in high and low seasons, which can cater for things like school fees.
To add the hair cut business i would like to diversify and stocks like school bags since most of my customers are school going children such like goods will attract them add on to profit margin due to expanded working capital which will be in line with my aim of opening a cloth line for my wife.
