I spent my childhood in a remote village from a polygamous family. Going to school was hard, since my Dad did not value education too much, yet I had that desire to study up to tertiary level. I struggled and reached the university with the help of well-wishers who I thank god for enlightening my life. My stepmother was too rough to us and she was the main cause of troubles. To avoid the troubles, I had to spend my entire life of high school at my Aunt's place, since the sponsors took me to a day school near her place.
I started my business with the aim of assisting my young siblings, who did not make it in school due to the ignorance of our father. The main aim was to ensure that they got something to eat without bothering the neighbours. I wanted to make my siblings independent and show them that everything can be possible.
Most of the people in my village are poor and they depend on few people who are employed and stay in town. I used most of my time mentoring them and advising them to use whatever small resources they have to establish themselves in life.
In the past, when I was young, I had the passion of playing with electronic gadgets like radios and phones whenever I came in contact with them. That is what ignited my dream of owning a cybercafe, however small it can be.
I offer people the services of a cybercafe in Langalanga Estate in Nakuru County. There are no other people around who own cybercafes, and therefore I took it as a challenge and an opportunity to raise enough income for me and my siblings.
The first income I got to start my business was that one that I saved while in university after I was offered a loan from the higher education loans board. I took the incentive -- though the amount was too small to cater for my upkeep -- but I had the mind and passion of starting a business that would sustain me after school.
The costs for the business are internet costs (Ksh 3,000 a month), computers (I have three that I borrowed from college mates free of charge), printing papers (Ksh 2,000 a month), and electricity bills (Ksh 500 a month). The monthly revenue I obtain from the venture is Ksh 8,500 a month. The profits I get I save them so as to buy the computers of my own, since those that I have belong to my friends. A portion of the profits is used for my upkeep and that of my siblings.
I will appreciate for your support to make me grow and assist the society in growing, too.
With the first loan I intend to buy a CPU, since I already have a monitor. The three computers I have belong to my friends, and therefore the first loan will ensure that I own one computer too. I have stayed for long with my friends' computers and have been able to purchase a monitor of 16 inches worth Ksh 5,500.
The new computer will increase revenue earned by 20% of the total revenue I used to earn before applying the loan. This will be a total boost to my business, since I will be able to purchase additional inventory in the future and improve my living standard and that of my siblings. With the loan, the business is projected to raise Ksh 12,000 per month instead of the previous Ksh 8,500 it used to generate.
