My name is Peter Mboroki. I am a Kenyan born in Meru County on the Eastern side of Kenya. This is an area which produces many agricultural products like tea and coffee as well as horticultural produce. The area is densely populated and there is stiff competition for land.
I was born and bred in this environment where my parents owned a small parcel of land which could only be used for food crops for family’s consumption. In fact the produce was not enough to feed the family and my parents had to do menial jobs to make the ends meet.
Luckily they managed to take me to school for primary and secondary education. I then left home to live with a relative in Mombasa which is very far from Meru. While there, I enrolled for a course in clearing and forwarding (C&F).
Unfortunately my relative who was sponsoring me for the course passed away when the course was half way. Life became very tough after this but I managed to complete the course and got my certificate through well wishers from my church.
I later got a job as a clerk at a clearing and forwarding firm where I worked for four years. The company went under and I left without any terminal benefits since the company was heavily in debts.
I had established good relationship with some of our clients and one of them approached me and gave me a job to clear his goods from the port of Mombasa. This was the humble beginning of my clearing and forwarding business. With time my clients increased and I finally managed to rent an office where I am still doing my work.
I am married with three children all who are in school. I also serve as a pastor in my church and I do outreach missionary work once in a while.
My work is clearing and forwarding from the port of Mombasa. I help clients clear their goods since this is a complex process that most are not conversant with. My clients are from Kenya and other neighbouring countries.
The business has stiff competition and my market share is quite small since the market is dominated by big players who have a lot of resources. However, with hard work, I am hoping to grow my business and reach that level in a few years. With Zidisha support, I believe I will get there soon.
This business brings an income of about $500 per month and half of it goes to covering overheads and the rest is for paying family bills.
If given this loan, I will use it to buy a computer for the office. I currently depend on bureau services where I take my work for typing. This is expensive and time wasting and I this can be solved by acquiring a computer and a printer for the office.
I have planned to this for a long time but there are many things competing for the profit that my business makes. I think that this Zidisha loan is a perfect opportunity to help realize this goal which will be a milestone in my business.
A refurbished computer will cost me about $120.
